The renovation of the church in Sotin, near Vukovar, following extensive damage inflicted on this church during the recent war when it was first hit by mortars and then set on fire. The renovation was completed on time, i.e. by the end of 2002. Church is surrounded with gardens and alley from 19 century, as well as classical rectory.
Sotin is ancient village, in Roman times was fortress Cornacum, as a part of Roman limes. Sotin, as a name was first mentioned in 1289. Village was in possession by numerous aristocrat families during centuries. When Franciscans were dislodged from Belgrade in 1739, they brought a picture of Virgin Mary (Domina Nostra), and they started with devotion of Virgin Mary. Church of Holy Virgin Mary was build in 1768; 1810 was covered with tiles; radical reconstructed was 1859; that year belfry was build in classical style, and covered with tin. Another reconstruction was 1905, when interior was painted and new statues were placed in church. After WWll, belfry was demolished, and reconstructed in mid-70´s. During the preliminary work undertaken in the scope of this renovation, it was established that the church is much older then currently thought, and that it in fact stands on foundations of a much older church dating back to pre-Turkish times.
